At the Acorn, we’re passionate about proper nutrition from real food. Katie has been growing her own veg since 2008 and enjoys being able to bring vegetables from garden to tummies in a way that they maintain their amazing nutrients.

In 2021 we were delighted that we were able to build a small kitchen garden at the back of the Heartwood kitchen. It’s been such a wonderful addition to our meals; now having the ability to add super fresh greens and herbs to the meals when in season.

The garden has also given us opportunity to build in some community gardening sessions. This is where anyone can come along and be in the space – sharing ideas, inspiration whilst doing a little tentative gentle gardening or having a sit in the space… everyone is welcome.

Katie feels there are huge benefits to people’s mental well being. Having hands in the soil gives us a physical boost through our micro biome but also watching nature wax and wane, ebb and flow, allows us to witness a resilience and acknowledge that we cannot remain in constant summer and that even in the depths of winter, there is life in the soil, a potent energy ready for rebirth.

There is a wonderful book called ‘The Well Gardened Mind’ by Sue Stuart Smith, that was the final nudge needed to focus on creating this space.

We also take our passion for nutrition and herbal medicine further afield by incorporating local foraging and medicine making.
